The lists were the funniest parts of the book, but I was a little squicked out that she had a "favorite serial killers" list. In my experience, there’s nothing more boring than people who take themselves way too seriously (I live in LA, so I should know). Honestly, I’d have more respect for her if she actually embraced her “this is who I am and I don’t care what you think” mentality that she advises we all take, when it came to things that have consequences like politics and human decency. What I want is for everyone to embrace whatever they’re into, even if society or their boss or some asshole online says it’s lame.

This book is for people who want to let their basicness shine and listen to show tunes while they drive to the gym (with a full face of makeup, natch), but then drive past the gym and head to the bar instead. I’m an avid listener of her podcast, and I felt like 95% of this book are stories and topics I’ve already heard. I love her thoughts on relationships, sex, even hookups--how she says women are active participants in romantic relationships, not just there to passively be chased until they "give it up.Sure it was an easy read and i finished it in 3 nap sessions, but it was cleverly layered with anecdotes from the perspective of a young girl growing up in the real world, facing fashion disasters, making an ass of herself to replicate Angelina Jolie and terrible grey lipstick, losing her virginity — and ultimately a quirky coming of age story that reminds us all to not take ourselves so seriously because the truth is none of us really know what we’re doing on this earth anyway so why don’t we just do what makes us happy. She takes charge when she needs to (just watch any of her birthday episodes) but she is definitely a girls girl and will be there for you when you need it most. I started painting just this year due to the pandemic, having lots of free time, lots of extra anxiety, lots of it, so I started using art to distract myself —and through that I realized I have a true passion for art.

Maybe the problem (or at least part of it) was me picking up this book without even knowing who the author was, or what Vanderpump rules is (I think I got the show name right? This book is for everyone out there who is tired of pretending they would rather read War and Peace or see a Daniel Day-Lewis movie about sewing than watch a Saw marathon and drink a delicious but basic AF cocktail like a Kir Royale. Discover how to embrace your best basic self in this instant New York Times bestselling, laugh-out-loud hilarious, and “refreshing to read” ( The Cut) guidebook from the breakout star of Bravo’s hit reality show Vanderpump Rules. Ok, so I'm a 52 year old attorney and I work with some pretty serious stuff---survivors of sexual assault--that kind of thing and I love watching Vanderpump Rules b/c it reminds me of me and my friends when we were in our 30's.Schroeder's book is weird because in trying to become self-effacing, she ends up revealing her privilege. It’s amazing what you can learn about friends in a situation where you have to take a shovel into the woods to poop, or realizing the only true heroes at a campsite are the coffee bringers. Originally from New Orleans, she now lives in Los Angeles, where she films and hosts her popular podcast Straight Up with Stassi. Das Buch ist ziemlich groß, aber das Paket ist mindestens dreimal so groß, man kann sich also nicht vorstellen dass darin ein Buch liegt.

I loved this book so much, it made me feel less alone as a basic chick, as well as making me laugh with it's honestly. From her very public breakups to her most intimate details about her plastic surgery, Stassi shares her own personal experiences with her trademark honesty - all with the hope you can learn something from them. She gets a bonus point for pointing out how unflattering the Kardashians' clothes are and how it all feels like a joke or a scam or both, but I'm taking away said point because she doesn't think men in sweaters are hot and she's trying to shit on athleisure wear (WHICH IS THE BEST-- IT'S LIKE SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE PAJAMAS, which, incidentally is why Juicy Couture tracksuits were also the best). Also, I am LOLing that she thinks wearing a "Free Winona shirt" and cheap sunglasses made her a goth when she was a kid. To her credit, Stassi was going through a rough time when VanderPump started and she likely handled it in the best way she knew how.She made made money off me (I drank the kool-aid and thought this book might be worth it) so I purchased it. There’s nothing more boring than people who take themselves too seriously or think you have to be pretentious to be cool. Maybe the book wouldn't have been as annoying if I had read it instead of listened to the audio version, but, regardless, Stassi could've done so much better, gone so much deeper. I find Stassi and her adorable now fiance Beau hilarious and very entertaining on the show, so I figured her book would a fun, light-hearted break from the heaviness.
