Description

During summer break they embark on various day trips to see various filming locations from some of their favourite films. Saeki is super respectful, he doesn't expect anything from the other when confessing, he just wanted to take that out of his chest and was satisfied and happy with them being able to continue to be friends. Nagisa Furuya has a gift for drawing characters whose facial expressions and reactions tell us so much more than their words do (she’s especially good at eyes). Plot Summary: Chiharu Saeki and Wataru Toda are two high school students who share a common hobby: They love to watch movies. The Summer of You manga features story and art by Nagisa Furuya and is the first volume in the My Summer of You series.

It's not tragic, which is nice, and certainly not irreparable either, but it does force Wataru to more fully confront his own emotions and to realize that while Saeki may have said he didn't expect anything to come of his crush, Wataru himself now wants their relationship to change. As the two travel together and experience moments of becoming closer through their love of film, Wataru stops being unbothered. One day, Saeki confesses to Wataru that he likes him but is fine with them staying friends, but he has one condition.

Even after they start dating, he is super respectful, knows what a 'no' is (or even when the other doesn't say no, he reads Wataru's facial expressions and stops if he sees he's uncomfortable). There’s one page of helpful translation notes and two delightful pages of afterword by the mangaka herself (her avatar is a little cat).

This generous Kodansha edition comes with not one but three bonus stories which are not just a couple of pages each but proper chapters that advance the story of the two young men beyond the end of the first volume and prepare the ground for the sequel The Summer with You. This is slice of life in the best sense of the word; there’s a wistful sadness pervading the whole text as the readers, alongside Wataru, come to realize how fleeting the pleasures of summer – and first love – can be. For over a century, Kodansha has relentlessly pursued quality and creativity, which allows us to continuously reimagine what could be.

It's a very sweet story and I really liked how the confession happened in the beginning and we got a good look on their friendship and what happened after. In boy’s love manga, I appreciate that the love stories are a little more layered and complex than your typical high school romance, a la Ouran High School Host Club. The two boys might be busy with their part-time jobs and schoolwork, but they’re living in the same city again at last, which sets off new sparks and adventures. But the more time he spends with Chiharu, Wataru realises that he may not only be as unaffected by Chiharu's confession as he claimed to be, but those feelings may also be mutual.Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). My Summer of You Volume 1: The Summer of You is created, written, and features art by mangaka Nagisa Furuya. As with your typical shounen ai, it is very clear to the readers that Wataru starts falling for Saeki and to me, it seems in an almost unconventional way.
