Graham’s 40 Year Old Tawny shows a golden amber colour, with a pale green tinge at the rim, denoting great age. An excellent alternative to Vintage Port for less formal occasions, such as a fine summers evening in the garden, or when accompanied with dark chocolate.

Aged for an average of 40 years in seasoned oak casks, our 40 Year Old Tawny is a testament to time and patience. Traditionally, the wine is passed ""port to port"" -- the host will pour a glass for the person seated at their right, and then pass the bottle or decanter to the left (to port); this practice is repeated around the circle. Though it accounts for around one percent of production, vintage port is the flagship wine of all Portugal. The wine is made from a blend of grapes from several different vineyards, and only the best grapes are selected for use in the wine. Graham’s continue to make some of their Ports by traditional treading in stone lagares but also own a modern lagare in Malvedos. I've used Eton Vintners for many years and have always found the staff unfailingly helpful and wise.

In 1890, Graham’s became one of the first companies in Portugal to make wines from their own vineyards in the premium Douro Valley. On the palate, an array of flavours from delicate fruit and raisins to toasted toffee and chocolate with an outstanding after taste. Composed of wines put aside generations ago, this is an incredible wine with an amazingly long finish, indicating both its age and immense quality. In 1820 the two brothers, William and John Graham, started as textile merchants and later ventured into the wine industry. The aromas are very complex with a powerful fragrance that expresses its age, and on the palate an array of flavours, from delicate fruit and raisins, to toasted toffee and chocolate, lead to a long and hugely satisfying aftertaste. The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers. As you pour this wine into your glass, you will immediately notice its deep amber color and sweet, intense aromas of dried fruit, nuts, and toffee.
