Once I had that flash of an image in my mind, wondering what it could be and why it would be there, I began writing All the Dead Lie Down. Captivating setting, interesting characters and relationship between them, intense mystery that revealed itself. Battling the hazing that comes with caring for children she finds that some of the pranks are too frightening to be conjured by children and with the arrival of the eldest Lovelace, Marin uncovers more than just a few skeletons in the closet.

The senators don’t know that a faction of extremist vigilantes believe that the bill will work against them, and that the right to bear arms is more important than any other, including the right to live.

This book wasn't perfect, it was predictable and rushed due to its length (or lack thereof), but it was also really charming, somehow? A combination of magic and horror, the book is about Marin who receives a letter to be a nanny at Lovelace House. Lyrical, authentic, intimate first-person narration … strong writing that features some dreamily lovely turns of phrase… a powerful, thoughtful, and ultimately hopeful debut. McCauley’s writing is as gorgeous as her story is gruesome, filled with a creeping dread that gets into your bones and holds you in thrall. I could have done without the nursery rhymes and the occasional Shakespearean quote that began every new chapter, but otherwise I found this an enjoyable and worthwhile read.We were directly told things like "the girls are demons" and "Alice was scary and wrong" despite only seeing the girls be normal mischievous kids who recently lost their father, and seeing Alice The Big Bad?

All these half dead animals just start popping up everywhere and Marin suspects that possibly one of the girls is doing more than just pranks. I'm usually not a big fan of the suspense/thriller genre, but this one has a depth of emotion and characterization that puts it above the typical thriller. If you like any of those things you might love this book, or be like me, and love all of those things separately, and be ticked off at the pastiche. Kai’s duties as the future Enforcer include eradicating any remaining Ordinaries, and these Trials are his chance to prove that he’s internalized his brutal training. Alice invited Marin on as Wren and Thea’s nanny since she and Marin’s mother, Cordelia, were childhood best friends. The pacing and characterisation was spot on and there wasn’t a moment I was bored or felt like scenes were unnecessary.

Thea buries her dolls one by one, hosting a series of funerals, while Wren does everything in her power to drive Marin away.

All the Dead Lie Down” drives us to a haunted house, or at least that’s what the locals believe, as Marin takes a summer job as a nanny for the two young daughters of her favorite author and former friend of her late mother.
