While the logic of the plot may make this a necessary choice, the downisde of it is that the reader only gets to observe the effects of the plague; the narrative does not really convey the way it feels. There is so much going on under our world of words and societal constructs, but we accept the surface as it is presented to us. Everything, in short, that makes the glue of the human world whether it relates to our human condition or to technical comforts. Add cult-like theorists and an easy manipulation of will, and Tanya and Paul's life together was going to always take a turn for the worse.

He received an MA in Creative Writing from Manchester Metropolitan University and Nod is his first published novel. I often go sleep reluctantly; it forces me to stop the fun activity I'm doing, usually reading or binge watching a series. The book opens with a glimpse into the eighteenth sleepless day and it’s clear this is heading into an Apocalypse style ending. Violent, frightening, textured, and dystopian are words that aptly describe the short-lived world that Barnes has created. I don't usually quote from the books I'm reviewing but in this case it's necessary, "Charles loved big words, loved forcing them into his sentences no matter how much they squealed. In truth, Nod could have easily been a novel written by Jim Crace, or for that matter, the transgressive-guru Chuck Palahniuk. In a publishing universe where the end of the world seems to come round with monotonous regularity, Barnes has found an ingenious way of bringing about the collapse of society. This novel is a debut, poignantly so — Barnes died of a brain tumor shortly around its release, and my paperback copy included a moving afterward by the author talking about his diagnosis and how it related to the novel. On their journey, the couple come across this story’s villain, a cult leader claiming the new world.

There she is on the bed, assuming the doggy style position, and the MC happens to notice she has shit smeared around her anus. And let me tell you that just a great concept and nothing more than that can have me going for a ten minutes rant without catching my breath. Mind, that also means three very minor but grating irritations; three entirely unnecessary distractions from the unfolding drama that could’ve been avoided. His girlfriend considers him to be a 'geek', going by a few scenes-- this is one of the author's many, many shortcomings.

This is exactly the kind of book that makes me feel like an idiot 😂 I don’t mind more literary-focused books, but there were some sentences I had to reread over and over again to try and figure out exactly what was trying to be said. Otherwise, I didn’t really like the MC, and I didn’t like how his girlfriend was portrayed/how he viewed her at times.La premisa es interesante y empieza bien, y ojalá hubiese seguido así, pero luego se vuelve pesadísimo y esta opinión está escrita sin haberlo terminado porque no me merecía la pena.
